Homer once said, “all men need gods.” Before science, people believed gods were the great creators, and some still believe gods are the makers of humans and the earth. With those ancient beliefs people constructed amazing creation myths.
People sometimes wonder, why are creation myths so similar? For example many creation myths have elements of gods, chaos and perfection. Which in many minds is bizarre because all beliefs are so different.
A common element in many myths are gods. For example in the Egyptian myth, the earth and mankind were started off by gods. In the Mayan myth gods start of the world as well. These aren’t the only myths with gods involved. This proves that gods are a common element in creation myths.
At the start of the Egyptian creation myth there was chaos which by the end was vanquished. Chaos is also an element in the Mayan myth. There was tons of chaos when the animals could not praise the gods. There was chaos because without words there were just loud noises.
A third element that is commonly used, would be perfection. For example in the Chinese myth of Phan Ku, Phan Ku died only when the earth and people were complete and perfect. Another myth that shows the element perfection would be the Mayan myth. In this creation myth the gods longed to create the perfect man to take care of their creation, earth. They never gave up until they made flawless humans, although in the end the humans were as good as the gods therefore some of their sight was removed.
As Froid once said, “myths are early man’s dream.” Even though beliefs are different all man are the same. That’s why there are common elements in myths.
